My take on Connor McDavid thus far

The 2015-16 NHL Season is very young and already Connor McDavid in his rookie season is living up to all the hype.  I have watched every game that the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid have played and he is the real deal.

I have read many comments about this young super star whom Wayne Gretzky has said is the best draft pick he has seen in 30 years and there are those who say he is just another product of the media, some have called him McHype and others some things that are not really repeatable here.

However, if you watch him play game in and game out all those negative comments and names that people like to call him fade away as he makes a nice deflection to score his first goal against the Dallas Stars in only his 3rd game, as he takes a pass from Taylor Hall and puts it nicely in the net or when for instance as he has already on various occasions sends the puck out front to Yakupov who puts it in the net.  Then of course who can forget that goal against Detroit as he undressed the goalie or that 3 point night in Calgary helping Edmonton win the first Battle of Alberta this year.

These are just a few examples of his excellent play this rookie year for Connor McDavid.  Remember now we are only 8 games in and we have all this and much more to say.  Like for instance his 8 points in 8 games, not bad for a kid who is only 18 years old.  Cheers for now.

Connor McDavid faces off against Alexander Ovechkin

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are playing host tonight to the Washington Capitals and Alexander Ovechkin.  The game has all the drama any hockey fan might crave.  First, you have Ovechkin who is hands down the best goal scorer in the league for almost 10 seasons and Second, we have the Phenom Connor McDavid.

Highlights from the Game

The game is under way and the Washington Capitals took no time proving just how good there are down the middle, scoring a beautiful goal on a three way pass with of course you guessed it Alexander Ovechkin at the center of it all.  Then as if to not be out-played Connor McDavid rushes down the ice making a nice pass to Yakupov who missed but then centered it to Pouliot who nicely scored, tying the game 1-1, that makes it 7 points in 8 games thus far for Connor McDavid.

The Washington Capitals answered back not long after Pouliot scored.  Then Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins took over and set up a nice goal by Klinkhamer.  The First period is over and late in the opener the Capitals took the lead once again as they out-played the Edmonton Oilers in there own end, making it 3-2 after one.

The second period started with a power play for the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid did not take long to capitalize (no pun intended) putting the puck past the Capitals netminder.  Well it looks like a run and gun game tonight for the Caps answers the Oils goal with a break away goal, making it 4-3.  Then they add a couple of more chasing Nilsson from the net and with that the Oilers respond with a beautiful goal by Taylor Hall and now the score is 6-4.

The third period is under way in Edmonton as they try to come back against the Washington Capitals who lead 6-4.  The Oilers are about to go on the Power Play, hopefully Connor McDavid and the gang can get pick up one here.

The game is now over and the Edmonton Oilers lost 7-4 to the Washington Capitals.  The show really was not about Ovechkin or McDavid but another player who had 5 points for Washington, a career high for him.  Cheers for now.

Things don't get any easier for McDavid and Oilers as they face Red Wings

The Edmonton Oilers have gotten off to a shaky start this season loosing there first 4 games before winning games in both Calgary and Vancouver against the Flames and Canucks.  But when you consider the teams they have faced in there losses thus far, St Louis, Nashville and the Dallas Stars, this is to be expected, especially from such a young team.

Tonight things won't be any easier for McDavid and the Oilers as they Face Off against the Detroit Red Wings.  Granted The Red Wings aren't the team they used to be, but they have some great talent up front in the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg.

However, if the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid can build on there last two games and come out firing on all cylinders early in the game they may have a chance of beating a team that is out to prove something, prove that there team wasn't just about a coach, like Mike Babcock, but it was about everyone contributing on a nightly basis to get the job done.

Perhaps too, the Edmonton Oilers will come out on top if Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can get there game going consistently, playing like we know they can play, like we saw them in the game against the Calgary Flames.

The outcome of tonight's game really lies in the hands of the players, it isn't that the Detroit Red Wings are that much better than the Edmonton Oilers, but which players are willing to show up night after night, playing consistent hockey night in and night out and that is where the difference lies and right now the winner of this concept is the Detroit Red Wings.  Cheers for now.

Update from game against the Detroit Red Wings...Oilers Win 3-1...Making it 3 in a row...

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers outplayed the Detroit Red Wings and defeated them 3-1.  McDavid scored a nice highlight reel worthy goal against Detroits netminder... See it below...

McDavid and Oilers defeat the Canucks 2-1 in Overtime

The Game was barely underway between Connor McDavid's Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks when McDavid made a nice pass from behind the net setting up Yakupov for the first goal of the night.

The Canucks tied it soon after and the scoring would fade out for both the second and third period sending the game into overtime.  This was my first look at the Edmonton Oilers in the 3 on 3 format for extra time.

The game is very fast  3 on 3 and there were no room for mistakes as the Vancouver Canucks would soon find out as Lauri Korpikoski scored on a break-away just 1:46 into overtime.

I thought Connor McDavid had a solid game for the Edmonton Oilers adding another point to his total, giving him 5 points in 6 games thus far this season, not bad for a rookie.  I think that Connor McDavid, Yakupov and Pouliot make for a nice line, they seem to play well together and tend to be in the right place at the right time.

However, if the Edmonton Oilers are to have success this season they will need to get some scoring from there third and fourth lines.  They will need depth if they are going to compete every night especially in the wild, wild west. They can't expect Talbot and Nilsson to stand on there heads every night. Cheers for now.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers get first win in Battle of Alberta

Connor McDavid was on fire tonight helping the Edmonton Oilers to there first win this season in the Battle of Alberta.  Connor McDavid had 2 goals and added an assist as The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2.

Much like the last game Connor McDavid started out strong and energized the whole Edmonton Oilers team.  But unlike the last game, the fire continued to burn throughout the whole night.  McDavid was at his best in the Second period coming down the right side and using the defence as a screen scored on the Calgary net minder Hiller.

Connor McDavid continued to press hard in the second and then in the third period set up a nice goal from behind the net by Yakupov. Then for the first time in his young NHL Career McDavid was given a minor penalty.  The game ended with Calgary making some late game rushes but Cam Talbot and the Defence held them off and then late in the game on a power play McDavid scored another goal.

The Oilers and McDavid will be making there way to Vancouver for a game on Sunday against the Canucks.  Perhaps the load has been lifted a bit with this win against Calgary.
