My take on Connor McDavid thus far

The 2015-16 NHL Season is very young and already Connor McDavid in his rookie season is living up to all the hype.  I have watched every game that the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid have played and he is the real deal.

I have read many comments about this young super star whom Wayne Gretzky has said is the best draft pick he has seen in 30 years and there are those who say he is just another product of the media, some have called him McHype and others some things that are not really repeatable here.

However, if you watch him play game in and game out all those negative comments and names that people like to call him fade away as he makes a nice deflection to score his first goal against the Dallas Stars in only his 3rd game, as he takes a pass from Taylor Hall and puts it nicely in the net or when for instance as he has already on various occasions sends the puck out front to Yakupov who puts it in the net.  Then of course who can forget that goal against Detroit as he undressed the goalie or that 3 point night in Calgary helping Edmonton win the first Battle of Alberta this year.

These are just a few examples of his excellent play this rookie year for Connor McDavid.  Remember now we are only 8 games in and we have all this and much more to say.  Like for instance his 8 points in 8 games, not bad for a kid who is only 18 years old.  Cheers for now.

Connor McDavid faces off against Alexander Ovechkin

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are playing host tonight to the Washington Capitals and Alexander Ovechkin.  The game has all the drama any hockey fan might crave.  First, you have Ovechkin who is hands down the best goal scorer in the league for almost 10 seasons and Second, we have the Phenom Connor McDavid.

Highlights from the Game

The game is under way and the Washington Capitals took no time proving just how good there are down the middle, scoring a beautiful goal on a three way pass with of course you guessed it Alexander Ovechkin at the center of it all.  Then as if to not be out-played Connor McDavid rushes down the ice making a nice pass to Yakupov who missed but then centered it to Pouliot who nicely scored, tying the game 1-1, that makes it 7 points in 8 games thus far for Connor McDavid.

The Washington Capitals answered back not long after Pouliot scored.  Then Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins took over and set up a nice goal by Klinkhamer.  The First period is over and late in the opener the Capitals took the lead once again as they out-played the Edmonton Oilers in there own end, making it 3-2 after one.

The second period started with a power play for the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid did not take long to capitalize (no pun intended) putting the puck past the Capitals netminder.  Well it looks like a run and gun game tonight for the Caps answers the Oils goal with a break away goal, making it 4-3.  Then they add a couple of more chasing Nilsson from the net and with that the Oilers respond with a beautiful goal by Taylor Hall and now the score is 6-4.

The third period is under way in Edmonton as they try to come back against the Washington Capitals who lead 6-4.  The Oilers are about to go on the Power Play, hopefully Connor McDavid and the gang can get pick up one here.

The game is now over and the Edmonton Oilers lost 7-4 to the Washington Capitals.  The show really was not about Ovechkin or McDavid but another player who had 5 points for Washington, a career high for him.  Cheers for now.

Things don't get any easier for McDavid and Oilers as they face Red Wings

The Edmonton Oilers have gotten off to a shaky start this season loosing there first 4 games before winning games in both Calgary and Vancouver against the Flames and Canucks.  But when you consider the teams they have faced in there losses thus far, St Louis, Nashville and the Dallas Stars, this is to be expected, especially from such a young team.

Tonight things won't be any easier for McDavid and the Oilers as they Face Off against the Detroit Red Wings.  Granted The Red Wings aren't the team they used to be, but they have some great talent up front in the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg.

However, if the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid can build on there last two games and come out firing on all cylinders early in the game they may have a chance of beating a team that is out to prove something, prove that there team wasn't just about a coach, like Mike Babcock, but it was about everyone contributing on a nightly basis to get the job done.

Perhaps too, the Edmonton Oilers will come out on top if Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can get there game going consistently, playing like we know they can play, like we saw them in the game against the Calgary Flames.

The outcome of tonight's game really lies in the hands of the players, it isn't that the Detroit Red Wings are that much better than the Edmonton Oilers, but which players are willing to show up night after night, playing consistent hockey night in and night out and that is where the difference lies and right now the winner of this concept is the Detroit Red Wings.  Cheers for now.

Update from game against the Detroit Red Wings...Oilers Win 3-1...Making it 3 in a row...

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers outplayed the Detroit Red Wings and defeated them 3-1.  McDavid scored a nice highlight reel worthy goal against Detroits netminder... See it below...

McDavid and Oilers defeat the Canucks 2-1 in Overtime

The Game was barely underway between Connor McDavid's Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks when McDavid made a nice pass from behind the net setting up Yakupov for the first goal of the night.

The Canucks tied it soon after and the scoring would fade out for both the second and third period sending the game into overtime.  This was my first look at the Edmonton Oilers in the 3 on 3 format for extra time.

The game is very fast  3 on 3 and there were no room for mistakes as the Vancouver Canucks would soon find out as Lauri Korpikoski scored on a break-away just 1:46 into overtime.

I thought Connor McDavid had a solid game for the Edmonton Oilers adding another point to his total, giving him 5 points in 6 games thus far this season, not bad for a rookie.  I think that Connor McDavid, Yakupov and Pouliot make for a nice line, they seem to play well together and tend to be in the right place at the right time.

However, if the Edmonton Oilers are to have success this season they will need to get some scoring from there third and fourth lines.  They will need depth if they are going to compete every night especially in the wild, wild west. They can't expect Talbot and Nilsson to stand on there heads every night. Cheers for now.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers get first win in Battle of Alberta

Connor McDavid was on fire tonight helping the Edmonton Oilers to there first win this season in the Battle of Alberta.  Connor McDavid had 2 goals and added an assist as The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2.

Much like the last game Connor McDavid started out strong and energized the whole Edmonton Oilers team.  But unlike the last game, the fire continued to burn throughout the whole night.  McDavid was at his best in the Second period coming down the right side and using the defence as a screen scored on the Calgary net minder Hiller.

Connor McDavid continued to press hard in the second and then in the third period set up a nice goal from behind the net by Yakupov. Then for the first time in his young NHL Career McDavid was given a minor penalty.  The game ended with Calgary making some late game rushes but Cam Talbot and the Defence held them off and then late in the game on a power play McDavid scored another goal.

The Oilers and McDavid will be making there way to Vancouver for a game on Sunday against the Canucks.  Perhaps the load has been lifted a bit with this win against Calgary.

Connor McDavid First Taste of the Battle of Alberta

Tonight Connor McDavid will have his first taste of the Battle of Alberta as the Edmonton Oilers will face-off against the Calgary Flames.  The first 4 games have not been easy for McDavid as he has faced fierce opposition in the St Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and the Dallas Stars.

Tonight Connor McDavid will be going from the frying pan to the fire as he faces Edmonton longest standing foe in the Flames.  Calgary and Edmonton have been battling for supremacy in the Alberta for as long as they have existed.  Perhaps the most epic battles took place during Wayne Gretzky tenure with the Edmonton Oilers during the late 1970's and the 1980's.

Battle of Alberta Heats up Tonight

Tonight could be the night that marks a new era in the Battle of Alberta, with Connor McDavid making his first appearance on this battle ground in enemy territory.  Could this be the night that marks a change in a battle that Calgary has been winning for quite some time now.  Could this be the night that Connor McDavid takes back some ground from the Calgary Flames.

Tonight could be that night when hockey fans will look back and say the tide has turned in the Edmonton Oilers favor. Cheers for now.

Connor McDavid First NHL Game at Home in Edmonton

Connor McDavid is playing his first game at Home in Edmonton tonight against the St Louis Blues. During his first shift tonight he had a nice shot on goal and took the body to the blues. The Edmonton fans were energized and so were the Oilers for on the very next shift the Edmonton Oilers scored. However, the lead was very short lived as the Blues tied it up a couple minutes later.

McDavid has been quiet since then, he has been watching more than getting into the play. After watching 2 periods of tonight's game I must say there isn't much offense going on. The St Louis Blues did manage to score another goal from the point and take a 2-1 lead into the third.

The Oilers along with Connor McDavid have had some nice power play opportunities and have fought hard in front of the net during it, maybe they can get one in the third and send it to O.T.

The third period came and went and there were a few goals scored but once again the Edmonton Oilers come up short, losing to the St Louis Blues 4-2.  I really believed that Connor McDavid would have a much better night and maybe score a couple of goals, but that is a tall task against the Blues.  Cheers for now.

Connor McDavid scores first NHL Goal against the Dallas Stars

We all knew it had to happen sooner or later and tonight against the Dallas Stars Connor McDavid scored his first Career NHL Goal.  The Edmonton Oilers were down 2-1 when Connor McDavid tipped in a point shot to get His first goal in the NHL and tie the game 2-2.

Connor McDavid joins the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby in scoring his 1st NHL goal in the 3rd game of his career.  Wayne Gretzky scored his first goal against Vancouver in the third game and Sidney Crosby scored his 1st goal against the Boston Bruins in the third game of his career.

Connor McDavid Still Looking for First Career NHL Point tonight against the Dallas Stars

The first period is over between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars and the Stars lead 1-0.  Connor McDavid is still looking for his first point in the NHL.  McDavid is looking good out there tonight again, throwing his body around against Oduya and setting up Yakupov for the Oilers best chance of the game.

I really believe that there is some good chemistry between McDavid and Yakupov.  Yakupov seems to be able to handle the pass and shoot without fumbling, which is an asset for sure...More to come...Ah hum...McDavid is on the bench again for the start of the game, when will this insanity stop.  Please coach put him on the ice for the opening face-off.

I knew it had to happen sooner or later, Connor McDavid scores his first goal and gets his first Career NHL Point.  The Edmonton Oilers were down 2-0 when McDavid went to work and help make room for the first goal and then scored the second goal to tie it up.

The second period is over and the game is still tied at 2-2.  Connor McDavid was interviewed on live T.V. and he is very happy and relieved to have the first goal of his NHL Career.

During the third period it was all Dallas Stars.  At one point they were outshooting the Edmonton Oilers 14-1.  The Oilers had a nice breakaway but couldn't finish and the Stars went down the other end and scored and then got an empty net goal to boot beating the Oilers 4-2.  Connor McDavid was on the ice alot and was making some nice plays and getting in front of the net and in one play almost scored again.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers will have to wait until Thursday to try and get that 1st win of the season on home ice against the St Louis Blues.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Dallas Stars

I for one am really looking forward to tonight's game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars.  Will this be the night that Connor McDavid finally breaks through with his first goal or first point of the season of his NHL career?  Will this be the night that the Phenom shows us why he is the best thing since Sidney Crosby?  Or will this be the night that the most anticipated player possibly of all time will lead his team to its first victory of the Season?

Connor McDavid many say is a product of the media, nothing more than just hype and will just go down in history as another young talent that the Edmonton Oilers destroy.  I for one don't buy it, from watching just the first 2 games of this young man's young career there are tell tale signs that things are going to be different this time, so different that not even the Edmonton Oilers can mess it up.

The Phenom as he is rightfully called is a well rounded two way player who can set up a play at one end and race back in time to stop one at the other end.  His Speed, His Stick and his Hockey IQ are unprecedented for such a young player.

Connor McDavid as I have said many times before is the real deal and tonight just might be the night that we see why.  Why the critics are wrong, why he is called the best thing since Sidney Crosby, why he just may be the best overall pick of all time and why he is called the Phenom. I for one am looking forward to Connor McDavid silencing his critics. Cheers.

Connor McDavid's Second Game in the NHL

The game is underway in Nashville as Connor McDavid young NHL career continues.
I noticed once again that Connor McDavid was sitting on the bench for the opening face-off.

I really hope this will stop real soon.  Afterall, he is without doubt the best player that the Edmonton Oilers have.  I mean Taylor Hall and the other first rounders have had there chance, give McDavid his now please.

Well enough about that for now, I want to focus on the early play in the game.  The Oilers and Connor McDavid look a lot better already in this game.  McDavid is flying around the ice on every shift.

They have had 2 power plays in the game so far, no goals but they are looking really good for sure.  One thing I noticed on the last power play is that Connor McDavid was wide open on the right side and his team mates were playing like he didn't exist, give him the puck and he will score.

On Connor McDavid's last shift he was skating fast, passing the puck like the pro he is, he is having a nice game tonight.  He may be a little to nice out there, he may have to get that game face on that all great players have.  Bare down on them Connor.

The Edmonton Oilers just killed off their first Penalty of the game, making it 4 for 4, nice way to start the year on the Penalty Kill.  Connor McDavid was on the ice immediately after the Penalty Kill and he was playing a defensive role in his own end and then worked the puck down the ice for a nice play.

The first period is over and it is 0-0, not bad for the team they are facing.  I have to say though that Talbot looks awesome in net and he is going help the Edmonton Oilers a lot this year.  He is going to give them stability in net which is very necessary for success in the NHL.

Connor McDavid played a little over 5 minutes in the first period, I think he needs a little more time out there, especially early in the game.

I'm really impressed with the two way play of Connor McDavid.  He is playing a complete game out there tonight,  He is in the defensive zone and making some rushes into the Predator's zone. He is also making and taking some contact at both ends of the ice.

McDavid just set Yakupov up  nicely but Renne was there to make the save.  I hope he will start shooting more sooner rather than later.  I like the look of McDavid and Yakupov.  Just a few moments ago McDavid set Yakupov up again and then took a heavy check into the boards.

The Speed of Connor McDavid is Phenomenal.  Every time he picks up the puck he puts it in high gear and moves it quickly down the ice and on the last play he got a nice shot off.  It won't be long and he will have his first goal.

The Oilers just had another power play and they had some nice rushes but no shots, McDavid played the first minute and made a couple of plays in the Predator's Zone.

Wow is all that I can say about the play of McDavid on the last shift he set up two really nice plays but the recipients couldn't finish it, however, Renne is no slouch in net.  We are going to see some nice set ups by the soft hands of Connor McDavid.

The second period is over between the Nashville Predators and the Edmonton Oilers and the Nashville Predators scored a late goal and lead 1-0.  This should set things up nicely for a good finish in the third.

The third is underway and the Edmonton Oilers just drew another penalty and are working hard on the power play to tie the game.  Well the power play is over and no goal yet but a very exciting game though.

So the Game is over and the Nashville Predators have scored again and have won 2-0.  No goals or points yet  for Connor McDavid.  The closest they got to a goal tonight was a kicked in puck.  We'll have to wait another night to see Connor's first point or goal or hopefully both.  Connor McDavid played a really solid game tonight and I'm looking forward to the next one.  Cheers.

What is Todd McLellan thinking sitting McDavid in Debut NHL Game

Yeah I have been reading and listening to what the coach has had to say about McDavid thus far and I'm not that impressed with his comments.  In an interview before McDavid's debut game he said we will see how he does when he starts looking more like a man than a boy and then here in this story he says his play was really inconsistent and along with that McDavid was on the bench at the beginning of his first game for the center ice puck drop.

I know there are still some remnants of the old Oilers still hanging around the team, some of the same who decided against taking Crosby to the Olympics the first time he was eligible and we all know how that worked out.  And what the coach did at the beginning of the first game reminded me a bit of how the coach of Team Canada left the great one on the bench during the shoot-out in the medal round of the Olympics and we know how that turned out for them.

I hope the coaches Ego can handle the Phenom that McDavid is, for if he can't it going to get real messy real soon and we know who is going to lose that battle.  Cheers.

How did Connor McDavid's play in his First NHL Game

I think Connor McDavid is the real deal.  Sure he was a little nervous at the beginning of the game and sure he took a little while to adjust to playing in the NHL, but once he settled in he started making some really nice plays in front of the net and in the corner.

I watched the whole game and it is interesting to note that as the game went along the name McDavid was on the lips of the announcer over and over again.  I noticed this in the 3rd Period especially.  He was really starting to wheel and deal as the third period wore on.

Now it is no surprise that the Edmonton Oilers lost to the St Louis Blues, one of the Premier teams in the NHL for the past 2 or 3 years now and it really isn't any surprise that Connor McDavid didn't score or have a point in his first game.  After all the Oilers have lost to the Blues repeatedly as of late and Connor McDavid is just starting to get his legs in the NHL.

What every fan of Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers should take away from this first game is this, Connor McDavid is fast, can make plays in the corner and is not afraid to get in front of the net.  Any coach would be happy to have any player who has just one of those skills, but Connor McDavid has all three.  Good things are coming soon to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.  Cheers.

Connor McDavid First Game in NHL

Tonight Connor McDavid plays his first game in the NHL.  This is a game that no serious hockey fan should miss.  This is the beginning of a new era in the NHL and for the Edmonton Oilers.  Connor McDavid will have the same opportunity that Sidney Crosby had in 2005 to show the Hockey world that he is the real deal.

We have been hearing for a long time now just how great Connor McDavid is and I for one can't wait to see it for myself.  Just a few moments ago I was listening to a radio program talking about how one very well respected scout has ranked Connor McDavid as the greatest Draft Pick of all time, listing him ahead of people like Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby and the likes.

The first game will certainly be a challenge for the young Edmonton Oilers team and for Connor McDavid as they face one of the top teams in the NHL, the St Louis Blues.  But being young is something the Edmonton Oilers should be used to considering they have been stuck in the rebuilding stage for many years now.

I hope Connor McDavid all the best in his NHL Debut and I hope that he can exceed Sidney Crosby's first season point total of 102 points in 2005.  Perhaps he can also help the Edmonton Oilers make the Play-Offs this year something that Crosby couldn't do for the Pittsburgh Penguins in his NHL Debut Season.  However, even if the Oilers don't make it to the Play-Offs they are used to that as they haven't done so in 9 Years, Currently, the longest Play-Off Drought for any team in the NHL.  All the Best to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.  Cheers.
